A Very Happy New Year to everybody in our Rotary Family.
Congratulations go to Wendy Mieske and her son, who received Student of
the
Month honors at the Hunt School.    A tip of our collective Stetson goes
to
our member Denise LeMeilleur and her husband David, for endowing a Heart
of
Gold Scholarship for the Christian Women's Job Corps. It's a memorial to
one of the LeMeilleurs' longtime employees who passed away last year. Our
Rotary Club has a long connection with the Christian Women's Job Corps,
which helps prepare young women to enter the job market, or move up from
low-paying jobs that don't cover their cost of living. For instance, our
Past President Kim Clarkson teaches classes in grooming, which obviously
is
an essential part of making a good impression on a prospective employer.

Kudos also go to our trumpet virtuoso George Eychner for putting in a lot
of ours over New Year's, helping keep the great Big Band sound alive as
part of the Sentimental Journey Orchestra. On this coming Saturday night,
George, Tom Terrell and Jay Dunnahoo will be playing in the Symphony of
the
Hills concert of famous movie themes at the Cailloux Theater.     And I
hope that everyone saw the six-column spread in the Kerrville Daily Times
last weekend, including a color photo, a black-and-white photo and our
news
release on a whole lot of the year-end activities of our Rotary Club.    I
know that there are still more things still out, including the amount of
money we raised with our Saturdays of bell-ringing for the Salvation Army,
and how many votes our beautiful entry received in the Tree Forest
competition at the courthouse, and I'm looking forward to sharing those
with the public and with my brothers and sisters in Rotary.
