Dr. Alberto Perez de Leon provided an overview of the USDA Knipling Bushland research laboratory located in Kerrville just north of I-10 on Highway 16. The facility is celebrating its 70th year in operation, with 53 years at the current location. Primary work performed includes research on ticks, screwworms and blood feeding flies. The two doctors for whom the lab was named were instrumental in developing the sterile insect technique, which has eliminated the screwworm in the United States and Mexico. Screwworm eradication has a significant positive impact on livestock management practices, wildlife and the economy.
